The Magician’s Fire is a delightful preteen story, written by Mary Josefina Cade. Although filled with magical spells, fantasy, time-travel, adventures with the mythical characters of the British Museum, a subtle warning is attached to all this fun-filled paraphernalia: how susceptible our young can be to the lures of modern technology. The characters are all likeable and credible with their coming-of-age defiance of parents, their wish to be free of parental control, their attraction to the fun and mysterious, but most of all, for their heartfelt urge to help each other out, no matter what. This is a sure pleaser for young readers, and judging by the last sentence, we should see these characters in a future book.
